Recently, Gilbert Flores Español Michael Mejía, the lucky winner of a custom purple Lamborghini Urus in a giveaway by Shakira, has made the difficult decision to sell the coveted luxury vehicle.
Mejía, a New York City-based artist, won the car in December 2024 after participating in a social media contest tied to the release of Shakira’s song “Soltera.” His winning entry, a TikTok video, showcased his artistic illustrations of Shakira interwoven with glimpses of his life. The big reveal of his prize-winning entry occurred on Univision’s Despierta América.
While the 2022 Lamborghini Urus, valued at approximately $280,000, was a dream come true, the ongoing expenses of owning such a high-end vehicle have proven to be a challenge. Mejía received the car just last week and shared his struggles with the financial burden.
“Not only did she gift me a car, but she also gave me money to maintain it, $90,000!” Mejía explained in an interview for El Gordo y La Flaca. He went on to clarify that even with the generous gift, the costs of maintaining the car are significant. “So far, all the taxes for transferring the car, legal matters and insurance for six months have been paid. And now the federal taxes are due at the end of the year, and yes, that will be about $95,000,” he continued, detailing the financial struggle. “The insurance for the car costs more than $2,000 a month, and that’s just the way it is. So, with the money she gave me, the car is maintainable for a while, but it’s always quite expensive to keep it.”
Mejía further noted that it cost around $70 to fill the car’s tank every two days.
He claims he has received several offers to sell the car in parts, even down to the rearview mirror, tires, and steering wheel.
“Someone offered roughly between $700,000 and $800,000. Can you believe it? That is wonderful. I think it’s anyone’s dream to have their million. A million and one dollar, I’ll be happy,” he added with a chuckle.
During the TV appearance, the host also revealed that Mejía is writing a book about his life-changing experience. In a surprising twist, he also discovered a jacket in the car, seemingly belonging to Shakira, and is now considering auctioning it. The full interview, which is in Spanish, is available online.
