The Škoda Favorit, a beloved hatchback from the 1980s, is making a comeback as a concept electric vehicle that seamlessly blends nostalgia with cutting-edge technology. As part of Škoda’s ‘Icons Get a Makeover’ series, this modern interpretation retains the essence of the original while embracing contemporary design and sustainability.
The original Škoda Favorit was launched in 1987, designed by the renowned Italian design house Bertone. With its 1.3-liter engine producing between 40 and 50 kW, it was tailored for the roads of the Eastern Bloc. Production continued until 1994 when it was succeeded by the Felicia model. Fast-forward to 2025, and Škoda has tasked designer Ljudmil Slavov with reviving the Favorit as a modern electric car.
The new concept takes the form of a crossover between an SUV and a hatchback, boasting a higher body structure that accommodates battery placement in the floor. Slavov faced the challenge of simplifying Bertone’s minimalist design language while staying true to its spirit. Rather than altering the fundamental shapes, he chose to evolve and expand upon them, resulting in a modern yet unmistakably Favorit design.
One of the standout features of this electric concept is its innovative front end. The designer has deviated from Škoda’s typical vehicle face to maintain the ‘Modern Solid’ style that Bertone originally envisioned. Collaborating with colleague David Stingl on 3D sketching environments, Slavov achieved a ‘Modern Solid expression’ that gives the vehicle volumetric proportions and a near-finished look.
The Škoda Favorit electric car boasts several striking design elements, including a shared door handle that splits in the middle to open in opposite directions. The wheels feature a simpler design with an embedded look, divided into four sections resembling a fan. However, the most captivating aspect is the headlights. While paying homage to the original model, the LED lights at both the front and rear can project various patterns customizable by the owner. These lights are framed by partially translucent covers that may also be foldable, giving the vehicle’s face a smiling appearance.
While the revived Škoda Favorit remains a concept electric car for now, the design team has also conceptualized a racing version inspired by the Favorit’s rally heritage. This racing concept features prominent bumpers made of soft-touch material, showcasing the versatility of the Favorit’s modern interpretation.
