Affordable EV Truck Concept
Slate Auto, backed by Jeff Bezos, has introduced the Slate Truck, a basic electric pickup truck priced between $20,000 to $25,000. The company’s approach focuses on simplicity, omitting features like stereos and infotainment systems from its base model. Instead, the vehicle emphasizes essential functions and crash safety features.

The base Slate Truck comes with a 57.2 kWh battery pack, rear-wheel drive, and a target range of 150 miles. An optional larger 84.3 kWh battery pack is available for a 240-mile range. The truck features an NACS charging port, allowing for rapid charging to 80% in under 30 minutes. Safety features include forward collision warnings, up to eight airbags, and active emergency brakes, aiming for a 5-star crash rating.

While the base model lacks modern conveniences, Slate plans to offer upgrades such as a “flat-pack accessory SUV kit” to convert the open truck into a five-seater. The vehicle’s performance is modest, with 0-60 mph acceleration in eight seconds and a top speed of 90 mph.

Slate intends to manufacture key components in the US, potentially in a Midwest factory. However, the project faces challenges due to ongoing tariff uncertainties and the automotive industry’s transition to electric vehicles. Despite these hurdles, the concept of a simple, affordable EV truck is generating interest in the market.
