Slate Autos, a newcomer to the electric vehicle market, has introduced an all-electric, two-seater pickup truck that can be converted into a five-seater SUV. The company, named after the television industry term ‘slate,’ signifies something new, which is exactly what they’re bringing to the EV market.
Key Features of the Slate Truck
The Slate Truck is designed to be straightforward and customizable. It starts as a bare bones package but offers over 100 accessories for personalization. One of its unique features is a flat-pack SUV kit that includes a roll cage, airbags, and a rear seat, allowing owners to convert their truck into an SUV.
The truck comes with a 52.7-kWh battery pack and a rear-mounted 150-kW motor, providing 201 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque. It targets a 150-mile range, with an optional 84.3-kWh battery available for a 240-mile range. The vehicle supports fast charging through a NACS port, reaching 80% in 20 minutes.
Design and Customization
The Slate Truck features a boxy exterior and a one-row cab, reminiscent of kei trucks. It has a curb weight of 3,602 lbs., similar to the current Ford Maverick. The truck is 175 inches long with a 109-inch wheelbase and a 5-foot bed. Slate offers three levels of wrapping for further customization.
Safety and Performance
The vehicle is designed with safety in mind, featuring up to eight airbags and safety systems like emergency braking and forward collision warning. While it may not deliver the ‘instant torque’ typical of EVs, with a 0-60 mph time estimated at 8 seconds and a top speed of 90 mph, it’s practical for local deliveries and light-duty work. The truck has a max payload of 1,433 lbs. and a max tow rating of 1,000 lbs.
Sales Model
Slate Autos is adopting a direct-to-consumer sales model, selling the truck online and delivering it to customers’ homes. This approach, combined with the affordable pricing under $20,000 after federal incentives, aims to make electric vehicles more accessible.
