Introduction to Slate’s Electric Pickup Truck

Slate’s electric pickup truck is the antithesis of the Tesla Cybertruck – light, affordable, and basic, unlike the Cybertruck’s heavy, expensive, and tech-loaded profile. Emerging from stealth mode recently, the Slate offers a straightforward business model: a rugged, affordable base product with numerous customization options. The interior is minimalist, featuring two seats, no radio or Bluetooth, and only essential warning chimes speakers, but includes a cellphone holder.

    Customization and Accessories

The truck’s design allows for easy upgrading, with space for soundbars or full sound systems. Over 100 accessory items will be available by late 2026, including power windows, lift and lowering kits, and an SUV conversion kit with a roof panel, bench seat, roll bar, seat belts, and airbags. Slate has partnered with a national auto repair chain for installation and warranty repairs, and owners can perform some maintenance themselves through Slate University, an owner support network.

    Key Features and Specifications

The Slate pickup has a 108.9-inch wheelbase, is 174.6 inches long, and features a standard 150-mile battery and optional 240-mile battery. It has a 1400-pound payload and 1000-pound towing capacity. The truck includes a 7-cubic-foot frunk with drain holes and a NACS charging port capable of 125-kW charging.

    Innovative Body Material

The Slate’s body is made from injection-molded polypropylene composite material, similar to Saturn’s body panels 40 years ago. This material is virtually indestructible and gray throughout, so scratches won’t show. The lack of a paint shop reduces production costs, though wraps will be available as an option.

    Business Model and Sales

Slate will sell directly to consumers, with pre-orders available for $50 and deliveries starting late 2026. The base price is expected to be around $27,500, potentially under $20,000 with federal EV tax incentives. The company aims to be cash-flow positive shortly after production starts, with minimal investment compared to other EV startups.

    Market Potential

The Slate truck appeals to those looking for a simple, affordable EV, reminiscent of classic compact trucks or the original Volkswagen Beetle. Its minimalist approach and owner empowerment through DIY repairs and upgrades could attract a dedicated market segment.
