    Introduction to Slate Truck

The Slate Truck is an upcoming electric vehicle (EV) that’s generating buzz for its affordability and modular design. With a base price of just under $27,500, it promises to be one of the most budget-friendly EVs on the market. When factoring in the federal EV tax credit of $7,500, the price can potentially drop to less than $20,000, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious buyers.

    Key Features and Specifications

The Slate Truck is designed with cost efficiency in mind, which means it comes with a minimalist approach to features. Some of the standard features include:

    • Digital gauge cluster that doubles as a rearview camera display
    • Power locks
    • Cruise control
    • Forward-collision-warning system with automated emergency braking
    • Roll-down windows
    • Manually adjustable rearview mirrors

The vehicle lacks luxury features such as an infotainment system or speakers, instead relying on users’ smartphones or tablets for entertainment. However, docks for these devices are available, with an optional accessory for tablets.

    Customization through Accessories

One of the standout features of the Slate Truck is its extensive range of accessories. Slate plans to offer over 100 accessory items, allowing buyers to personalize their vehicle according to their needs and budget. Some of the available accessories include:

    • Power windows
    • Lift and lowering kits (2.0-inch lift and 1.0-inch lowering)
    • SUV kit that includes a roof panel, three-across rear bench seat, roll bar, and airbags
    • Vinyl wraps for added color and customization
    • Alloy wheels (17- and 20-inch options)

The SUV kit is particularly noteworthy, as it transforms the pickup into an SUV by adding a roof panel over the bed, a rear bench seat, and other necessary components. However, the rear bench seat requires the installation of a roll bar.

    Performance and Battery Options

The Slate Truck is powered by a single rear-mounted electric motor producing 201 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque. The base model comes with a 47-kWh battery pack, offering an estimated driving range of around 150 miles. An optional larger battery pack with approximately 75 kWh capacity is available, potentially increasing the range to 240 miles. However, this upgrade comes at an additional cost and adds 302 pounds to the vehicle’s weight.

    Dimensions and Capabilities

The Slate Truck measures 174.6 inches in length, making it slightly shorter than a Subaru Crosstrek. It offers a sizable 7.0-cubic-foot front trunk and a five-foot bed. The vehicle has a towing capacity of 1000 pounds and a payload capacity of 1433 pounds in its base configuration.

    Production and Availability

Slate plans to start deliveries of the Truck by the end of 2026 from a repurposed plant in the U.S. Midwest. The company has secured over $111 million in funding from 16 investors, including Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, to support its venture.

    Conclusion

The Slate Truck presents an interesting proposition in the EV market, combining affordability with a high degree of customizability. While it may lack in standard features, its modular design and extensive accessory list allow buyers to tailor the vehicle to their specific needs. With the potential to be priced under $20,000 after tax credits, it could become a compelling option for those looking for a budget-friendly EV pickup.
