In a market where electric trucks are often associated with high prices and advanced technology, the Slate Truck emerges as a breath of fresh air, offering affordability, simplicity, and customization. Developed by the American startup Slate Auto, this minimalist electric vehicle (EV) pickup is designed to disrupt the industry with its base price of under $28,000, which can be further reduced to below $20,000 after federal incentives.

    Design Philosophy: A Blank Canvas

True to its “Blank Slate” name, the Slate Truck is conceived as a no-frills vehicle, providing a foundation that owners can personalize according to their needs. The standard model comes with manual crank windows, no built-in infotainment system, and an unpainted gray polypropylene exterior. Instead of traditional paint options, Slate offers vinyl wraps for color customization. The interior features fabric armrests and physical climate controls, with a standard smartphone mount and an optional tablet mount. This approach not only simplifies manufacturing and reduces costs but also empowers owners to tailor the vehicle to their preferences, embracing a DIY ethos.

    Slate Truck Specifications
    Slate Truck Specifications

Under the hood, the Slate Truck is equipped with a single rear-mounted electric motor producing 201 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque. Buyers have a choice between two battery options: a 52.7 kWh battery offering an estimated 150-mile range, and an 84.3 kWh battery extending the range to approximately 240 miles. The vehicle supports AC charging at 11 kW and DC fast charging at 120 kW via a NACS connector. While these specifications may not match those of high-end electric trucks, they align with Slate’s focus on practicality and cost-effectiveness for everyday use.

    Customization and Modularity

One of the Slate Truck’s standout features is its modular design. Beyond the standard two-door pickup configuration, Slate offers accessory kits that allow owners to convert the vehicle into a three-door, five-seat SUV with either a traditional squared-off roof or a fastback design. This flexibility caters to a broader range of consumers, from tradespeople to families seeking an affordable electric vehicle. Additionally, Slate emphasizes compatibility with DIY upgrades and 3D-printed accessories, fostering a community of users who can modify and enhance their vehicles according to personal needs and preferences.

    Manufacturing and Economic Impact

Slate Auto plans to manufacture the truck in a 1.4 million square foot facility in Warsaw, Indiana, repurposing a former printing plant. The company aims to commence production in late 2026, targeting an annual output of 150,000 units and creating approximately 2,000 jobs. By focusing on domestic production and sourcing from U.S.-based suppliers, Slate not only supports local economies but also mitigates risks associated with global supply chain disruptions.

    Market Reception and Outlook

Since its unveiling in April 2025, the Slate Truck has garnered significant attention, amassing over 100,000 refundable reservations within three weeks. This enthusiastic response indicates a strong market appetite for affordable, utilitarian electric vehicles. Backed by notable investors, including Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, Slate Auto has secured substantial funding to bring its vision to fruition. The company’s commitment to simplicity, affordability, and customization positions the Slate Truck as a compelling option for consumers seeking a practical entry point into electric vehicle ownership.

In an era where electric vehicles often come with premium price tags and complex features, the Slate Truck stands out by returning to basics. Its focus on essential functionality, coupled with opportunities for personalization, offers a unique proposition in the EV market. As production approaches, the Slate Truck may well redefine expectations for what an electric pickup can be.
