Introduction
Smart has launched its new #5 SUV, marking a significant departure from its humble beginnings as a microcar maker. The #5 is a tech-heavy family SUV designed to compete with the likes of Tesla’s Model Y. With a price bracket spanning from £32,000 to over £50,000, Smart is targeting the premium electric SUV market.
Design & Styling
The Smart #5 boasts a bold new design language, with a 4×4-inspired aesthetic and chunky proportions. At 4.7 meters long, it’s positioned at the heart of Europe’s fastest-growing market segment, competing with the Mercedes EQB, Mini Countryman EV, and Kia EV6. The #5 shares its underpinnings with other Geely EVs, featuring an 800V electrical architecture that enables rapid charging of up to 426kW.
Interior
The #5’s interior is more spacious than expected, with a flat floor and traditional straight-backed silhouette providing ample room. Boot space is generous, with 630 liters available out back and up to 74 liters in the frunk. The cabin feels more premium than its smaller stablemates, with decent materials and a reassuring sense of solidity.
Engines & Performance
The #5 is available with various powertrains, including a rear-driven entry-level model producing 335bhp and a top-of-the-line Brabus version with a staggering 637bhp. While the latter’s acceleration is undeniably thrilling, it may be overkill for everyday driving. The more sedate variants are likely to be the more practical choices.
Ride & Handling
Despite its size and weight, the #5 handles surprisingly well, with predictable steering and a comfort-oriented suspension. The Brabus model’s 21-inch alloys aren’t ideal for ride comfort, but the #5 copes adequately with cobblestones and speed bumps.
Verdict
The Smart #5 feels like a more convincing ‘big Smart car’ than its predecessors. While it faces stiff competition in the premium electric SUV segment, its clever packaging, refinement, and distinctive design make it worth considering. We’ll reserve final judgment until we’ve driven the standard car on UK roads, but the #5 is shaping up to be a strong contender.
