NASHVILLE, Tenn. – New surveillance video obtained by WSMV4 provides a glimpse into the tragic aftermath of a hit-and-run incident that occurred in South Nashville on Monday evening.

The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department (MNPD) reports that the incident took place around 6:50 p.m. on Old Hickory Boulevard when a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck struck a scooter rider. The rider was subsequently dragged nearly 900 feet under the truck before being released at the Firestone Parkway intersection. Tragically, the scooter rider died at the scene, and the driver of the pickup truck fled.

Josh Patton, a nearby resident, recounted his observations: “I was actually on my way home and they had it all blocked off last night. I saw kind of what had happened.”

Surveillance video shows the vehicle seconds after the victim was left behind.

Surveillance footage from a nearby gas station captured the dark-colored pickup truck speeding through the intersection of Firestone Parkway and Old Hickory Boulevard. In the aftermath, a man is visible on the ground, surrounded by debris from a scooter.

The pickup truck was last seen heading toward Murfreesboro Pike. Patton expressed concern about the speed of vehicles in the area: “[People] just go almost a hundred miles an hour. I’ve seen [it] sometimes, and it’s just crazy, man. They just need to slow down really bad.”

Patton, who also drives a pickup truck, expressed disbelief at the driver’s actions: “That’s so heartbreaking that they just run from that.”

Tennessee has a high rate of hit-and-run incidents. In 2022, the Volunteer State ranked fifth in the nation for hit-and-run crimes per capita.

Patton, reflecting on the area, stated, “I’ve pretty much been here my whole life and through here, they just fly through here for sure. I was going to say, people just need to slow down and they don’t need to be in such a big hurry to go.”

Metro Nashville police are continuing their search for the driver of the Toyota Tacoma pickup. The victim’s identity has not yet been released. Patton concluded, “I mean, it was just a freak accident. I just can’t believe that man. I saw it, just broke my heart.”
