Tesla has allegedly delayed the launch of a more affordable electric vehicle amid growing backlash against CEO Elon Musk and global protests targeting the brand. The decision comes as Tesla prepares to announce its financial results.
Sources close to the development told Reuters that plans for a stripped-down version of Tesla’s best-selling Model Y have been put on hold. The cheaper model was initially planned for production in the United States.
The most affordable Tesla currently available in the UK is the Model 3, priced at nearly £40,000. An upgraded Model Y is available from £44,990, with UK deliveries starting in June. Analysts predict that this refresh could boost Tesla sales.
The new Model Y features an upgraded exterior with Cybertruck-inspired headlights, improved battery range, and better aerodynamics. Tesla produced over 362,000 cars and delivered more than 336,000 electric vehicles in Q1 2025, despite losing production weeks due to Model Y line changes.
Tesla has faced boycotts and worldwide protests due to Musk’s alignment with right-wing political groups. The “Tesla Takedown” movement has organized protests outside Tesla dealerships in multiple cities, including London, Manchester, and Glasgow. Musk has blamed some protesters for damaging dealerships and making threats against his life.
