AUSTIN – Tesla is recalling 46,096 Cybertruck vehicles across the United States to address a potential issue with the exterior trim panels. These panels, specifically the cant rail, which is made of stainless steel, may delaminate and detach while the vehicle is in motion. This latest recall, announced on March 20, 2025, is a setback for Tesla, as the Cybertruck is crucial to the company’s growth. The recall comes as Tesla manages increasing competition and an existing vehicle lineup.
Tesla announced they will replace the rail assembly free of charge to fix the recall. Detached panels can become hazardous on roadways, increasing the risk of accidents, according to a notice from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Though Tesla does not separately report delivery figures for the Cybertruck, the recalled vehicles are estimated to represent a considerable portion of all Cybertrucks currently in use. This can be estimated because of the time it took to deliver the vehicles and the limited production they were able to produce in the past.
Demand for the unconventional EV pickup truck has slowed toward the end of 2024, following several production delays. Tesla shares fell near 2 percent in pre-market trading following the announcement of the recall.
Tesla shares have previously been impacted, falling nearly 42% in 2025. This happened amidst a sluggish EV market and the impact of Elon Musk’s presence in the government leadership potentially distracting from his role in leading Tesla. Analysts have pointed to a shift in sentiment toward the EV maker.
In 2024, Tesla vehicles accounted for 21% of all US recalls in the first three quarters, according to BizzyCar, a recall management firm. While numerous issues for various Tesla models have been resolved through over-the-air software updates, this recall highlights a more serious mechanical problem.
