Tesla is preparing to announce updates to two of its most popular electric vehicles, the Model S Plaid and Model Y Performance, in a bid to stay competitive against European and Chinese brands. Recent spy photos have shown the updated models being tested at the Nurburgring Nordschleife circuit, known as the ‘Green Hell’.
Updates to Tesla Models
The updated Model S Plaid has been spotted with aerodynamic improvements, including refreshed front and rear ends with updated air ducts and a modified rear diffuser. The Model Y Performance is expected to receive a dual-motor, four-wheel-drive powertrain similar to the Model 4, potentially boosting its power output to 510bhp and allowing it to accelerate from 0-62mph in under four seconds. Additionally, the Model Y is tipped for an interior facelift, featuring sports seats and carbon-fiber trim detailing.
Increased Competition in the EV Market
Tesla’s decision to update its models comes as the company faces stiff competition from rival EV brands. Chinese manufacturer BYD has begun outselling Tesla in Europe, and a new wave of affordable electric models is expected to further challenge Tesla’s market position. European luxury brands are also entering the fray, with models like the Porsche Macan Turbo Electric and Alpine A390 posing a significant threat.

The testing of Tesla’s updated models at Nurburgring may also be an attempt to reclaim the EV lap record, which was lost to Porsche last year when the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT lapped the circuit 18 seconds faster than Tesla’s Plaid.
As the electric vehicle market becomes increasingly competitive, Tesla’s updates to its flagship models are seen as a crucial step in maintaining its position as a leading EV manufacturer.
