Tesla is finally entering the Indian market with its first dealership scheduled to open in Mumbai this July. According to a Bloomberg report, Elon Musk’s electric vehicle company will launch its operations in India with the Model Y SUV. The decision comes after Heavy Industries Minister HD Kumaraswamy revealed that Tesla is more interested in establishing showrooms rather than manufacturing in India. The first batch of Model Y vehicles is being imported from Tesla’s Shanghai factory in China, contrary to earlier reports suggesting they would come from the Berlin manufacturing plant. The Model Y, which was first unveiled in January this year and later launched in China – the world’s largest EV market – will be Tesla’s first vehicle in India. The Indian market will receive the Model Y rear-wheel-drive version, with the first set of vehicles already arriving from China. Additional components such as supercharger parts, spare parts, accessories, and merchandise have been imported from the Netherlands, the U.S., and China. The 2025 Tesla Model Y Long Range RWD is a 5-seater electric SUV offering an estimated range of 574 km (EPA) or 593 km (CLTC). It is powered by a single motor, accelerating from 0-100 kmph in 5.4 seconds and reaching a top speed of 201 kmph. As the Model Y is being imported from China, it attracts a 70% tariff since it is priced under $40,000. Bloomberg reports that the Model Y will cost more than $56,000 (approximately Rs 49 lakh before taxes and insurance). This pricing is significantly higher than the U.S. market, where it costs $37,490 (slightly above Rs 34 lakh). The final pricing in India remains to be seen, creating anticipation among potential buyers.
