The Concept of the Ultimate Daily Driver Camper

The concept of using an RV as a daily driver has been around for decades. In the 1970s, manufacturers like Champion Home Builders attempted to create vehicles that could serve both purposes. One such vehicle was the Champion Trans-Van, a unique blend of a van and a motorhome.

The Birth of the Champion Trans-Van

The Champion Trans-Van was launched in 1977, with the goal of creating a vehicle that could be used for daily driving, camping, and even tailgating. Champion Home Builders achieved this by taking a Ford, Dodge, or Chevrolet cutaway van and adding a steel cage to the rear, which was then covered with fiberglass panels and a fiberglass roof. The interior was built out as a luxury motorhome, complete with amenities like a two-burner stove, refrigerator, sink, marine toilet, furnace, and shower.

The Trans-Van was marketed as a second car for families, with the ability to fit into regular parking spaces and tow trailers. It was available in 17-, 19-, and 21-foot sizes, and 21-foot sizes, with the option of a four-wheel-drive system. The base price ranged from $9,000 to $11,000, which is equivalent to $48,554 to $59,344 today.

    Challenges and Legacy

Despite its innovative design, the Champion Trans-Van faced several challenges. One major issue was its limited headroom, with only 6 feet of clearance inside. Additionally, the vehicle’s price was significantly higher than that of a standard van, making it less appealing to potential buyers.

Although the Champion Trans-Van was not a commercial success, it paved the way for modern tiny motorhomes. Its unique design and features have made it a sought-after collector’s item among RV enthusiasts. Today, mint condition models can sell for around $20,000, while most others can be found for under $10,000.

    Conclusion

The Champion Trans-Van may not have achieved its goal of becoming a mainstream daily driver, but it remains an interesting footnote in the history of RV development. Its innovative design and features continue to fascinate RV enthusiasts, and it serves as a reminder of the ongoing quest to create vehicles that can serve multiple purposes.
