The Forgotten Ford Explorer Sport Trac: A V8 Pickup Bargain

The Sport Trac: Ford’s Other Truck

Ford is known for its trucks, but one model that never received much attention is the Ford Explorer Sport Trac. This mid-size crew-cab pickup was sandwiched between the Ranger and F-150, competing against the Chevy Colorado and Dodge Dakota. Over two generations, Ford improved the formula, culminating in the pinnacle version equipped with the 4.6-liter modular V8 engine.

The 4.6-Liter V8 Gave It Legit Muscle

The second-generation Explorer Sport Trac, introduced in 2007, was built on the fourth-generation Ford Explorer, offering better rigidity and NVH levels. The real highlight was the inclusion of the 4.6-liter Modular V8, producing 292 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque. This was a significant upgrade from the Cologne V6, providing confident acceleration and improved towing capacity of up to 7,160 lbs.

It Was Comfortable, Capable, But Not Without Its Flaws

The Sport Trac was comfortable and capable, with a small-ish truck bed of 50 inches that could be extended with an optional bed extender. However, it had its drawbacks, including poor damping, a less luxurious interior, and cramped interior space. The Sport Trac Adrenalin trim, which debuted as a concept with a supercharged V8, made it to production but lacked the performance upgrades.

A Forgotten Bargain Hiding In Plain Sight

When new, the XLT trim cost $24,940, and the Limited trim was $26,540. Today, adjusted for inflation, those prices would be $39,608 and $42,149, respectively. Now, you can find used models with a V8 engine for around $10,000, making it an enticing option for those looking for a mid-size pickup with a V8. Many examples are available with high mileage, but this is seen as a testament to the truck’s reliability.

    Conclusion

The Ford Explorer Sport Trac is a forgotten bargain in the used car market, offering a powerful V8 engine and capable performance at a significantly lower price than when it was new. With prices starting from around $6,000 for high-mileage models and up to $20,000 for lower mileage examples, it’s an attractive option for those looking for a unique pickup truck experience.
