The Unlikely Test Mule: Holden SS-V Ute Meets Corvette
Chevrolet’s journey to create the C8 Corvette, a game-changing American supercar, involved an unexpected protagonist: the Holden SS-V Ute from Australia. This unusual test mule, codenamed ‘Blackjack,’ played a crucial role in the development of the C8 generation Corvette.
The Vector W8 and Corvette Legacy
The Vector W8 was America’s first supercar, and the Chevrolet Corvette is one of the most recent icons in the supercar landscape. The C8 Corvette, unveiled in 2019, raised the bar for performance and surprised many with its capabilities, which Chevy had kept under wraps during its development.
Chevrolet’s Stealthy Development
Unlike Porsche, which often uses existing models as test mules with significant modifications, Chevrolet took a different approach. They utilized a performance-enhanced utility vehicle from Australia – the Holden SS-V Ute – as the basis for their test mule. This choice was just the beginning of what made the Blackjack test mule so unique.
Meet the Blackjack Test Mule
The term ‘Blackjack’ has multiple meanings, but in this context, it refers to the peculiar test mule Chevrolet used during the C8 Corvette’s development. The Blackjack boasted an unconventional design, with wheel arches that seemed out of proportion to its body and a prominent rear wing. These distinctive features were part of Chevrolet’s strategy to disguise the true nature of the vehicle while still allowing them to test key components.

The Blackjack was a true Frankenstein’s monster of automotive parts. Its front half retained the original Holden SS-V Ute bodywork, while the rear was grafted with the bodywork of Australia’s version of the Chevrolet El Camino. Inside, however, it featured the interior of a Chevrolet C7 Corvette. Beneath its aggressive exterior lay a milled aluminum chassis, simulating the structure that would eventually underpin the C8 Corvette.
Technical Specifications and Innovations
The Blackjack test mule was equipped with coil-over dampers at all four corners, providing Chevrolet with valuable insights into the suspension geometry of the forthcoming C8 Corvette. Its powertrain was particularly noteworthy, featuring the 6.2-liter naturally aspirated LT1 V8 engine from the C7 Corvette and Chevrolet Camaro SS. Although power figures were not disclosed, this engine was eventually succeeded by the LT2 in the production C8 Corvette.
One of the most striking aspects of the Blackjack was its unconventional transmission – Porsche’s renowned PDK (Doppelkupplungsgetriebe) gearbox. This pairing of an American V8 with a German dual-clutch transmission was a testament to the experimental nature of the test mule.
The Holden SS-V Ute: A Performance Pickup
The Holden SS-V Ute, upon which the Blackjack was based, was no ordinary pickup truck. Introduced in 2007 as part of the VE Commodore range, it was designed to cater to the growing trend of using pickups as daily drivers. The SS-V trim level, mirroring the test mule used by Chevrolet, was powered by a naturally aspirated V8 engine, producing 362 hp at 5,600 rpm and 391 lb-ft of torque at 4,400 rpm.
The C8 Corvette’s Impressive Legacy
The culmination of Chevrolet’s efforts, including the use of the Blackjack test mule, resulted in the C8 Corvette Stingray. This mid-engine masterpiece has not only lived up to the hype but has also garnered numerous accolades from automotive publications. The C8 generation has marked several firsts for the Corvette nameplate, including the introduction of a mid-engine layout, all-wheel drive, and hybrid technology.
The subsequent Z06 and ZR1 variants have further cemented the C8 Corvette’s status as a supercar. The Z06, developed with the Ferrari 458 Italia as a benchmark, offers track-focused performance, while the ZR1 pushes the boundaries of speed and technology, rivaling hypercars in its wake.
“Corvette has always represented the pinnacle of innovation and boundary-pushing at GM,” said Mark Reuss, General Motors president. “The traditional front-engine vehicle reached its limits of performance, necessitating the new layout.” The C8 Corvette’s success is a testament to Chevrolet’s innovative spirit and willingness to experiment, as exemplified by the unusual Blackjack test mule.
