The Volvo ES90: A Stylish Electric Sedan with SUV Versatility

Volvo is expanding its all-electric lineup with a new vehicle that seamlessly blends the lines between sedan and SUV. The 2026 Volvo ES90 is a stylish, class-bending vehicle that’s expected to arrive next year, and it’s poised to make a statement in the electric vehicle market.

    Design and Dimensions

The ES90 boasts a crossover design with a blend of a sedan’s sleek proportions and a liftback rear hatch similar to its Swedish cousin, the Polestar 2. However, the ES90 stands out with its larger dimensions, including a 122.1-inch wheelbase within a 196.9-inch bumper-to-bumper length. This makes the ES90 closer in size to a Tesla Model S rather than a Model 3, though the ES90’s more upright stance—owing to its 7.1 inches of ground clearance and raised seating position—gives it a distinct presence. For comparison, you could consider the Toyota Crown, which offers a similar interpretation of a sedan-utility vehicle hybrid.

Volvo’s design language is immediately recognizable in the ES90. The “Thor’s Hammer” headlights and minimalist interior, crafted with premium and sustainable materials, are carried over from the EX90 electric SUV. At the rear, the vertical LED segments flanking the rear glass echo the design of Volvo’s SUVs, linking the new sedan to the brand’s SUV heritage.

Beneath the rear liftgate, the ES90 offers 14.97 cubic feet of cargo space, expanding to 25.89 cubic feet when the rear seats are folded down. In addition, there’s a 0.78 cubic foot frunk under the hood, providing a convenient space for a charging cable or emergency kit.

    Safety and Technology

Like the EX90, the ES90 features a prominent lidar sensor on the windshield, highlighting Volvo’s commitment to advanced driver-assistance technology. This “Volvo for Life” approach ensures the vehicle is ready for future safety advancements and over-the-air updates. In addition to the lidar, the ES90 incorporates five radar arrays, eight cameras, and a dozen ultrasonic sensors. These systems power features like collision mitigation, pedestrian safety, lane-keeping assistance, and adaptive cruise control. They’re also designed to support more automated driving features in the future.

The ES90 also includes interior radar and camera sensors that continuously monitor the driver and the cabin. The occupant detection system is sensitive enough to even detect “the soft breathing of a sleeping baby,” alerting a parent who may be unintentionally leaving a child behind.

    Performance and Range

Buyers will have a choice of three configurations for the ES90: Single Motor, Dual Motor, and Dual Motor Performance. The Single Motor version combines a 92 kWh battery pack with a 245-kilowatt motor on the rear axle. This setup delivers approximately 329 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque, with a 0 to 60 mph time of 6.7 seconds.

The Dual Motor configuration adds a 130 kW motor on the front axle for all-wheel drive. With a 300 kW rear motor and a 106 kWh battery pack, the Dual Motor variant produces 442 hp and 494 lb-ft of torque. Acceleration from 0 to 60 mph drops to 5.3 seconds.

Finally, the Dual Motor Performance model increases the output to a combined 670 horsepower and 635 lb-ft of torque, thanks to 220 kW and 280 kW motors on the front and rear axles respectively. The quickest configuration goes from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.9 seconds.

Volvo estimates a range of 404 miles for the ES90 with the smaller battery and 435 miles with the larger pack, according to the WLTP testing cycle. EPA estimates for the US market are still pending, but are typically around 10% lower.

    Charging and Features

The ES90 is the first Volvo to use an 800-volt version of the SPA2 EV architecture, which allows for faster and more efficient charging compared to the EX90’s 400-volt system. Volvo claims the Single Motor version will be able to charge from 10% to 80% in approximately 20 minutes at a 300-kilowatt DC fast-charging station, or a 350 kW plug for the Dual Motor models. Additionally, the ES90 will be “hardware ready” for bidirectional charging at home and features plug-and-charge capabilities for easy public charging.

Globally, the ES90 will use a Combined Charging System port for both AC and DC fast charging. While Volvo has not yet specified whether it will use CCS or the North American Charging Standard in the US, the car will support both, along with Tesla’s Supercharger network via adapters.

The interior highlights Volvo’s minimalist design with an optional electrochromic glass roof, which can transition from opaque to transparent with a button. The dashboard features a 14.5-inch central touchscreen display, a 9-inch digital instrument cluster, and an optional head-up display projected on the windshield. The ES90 will integrate Google’s built-in software suite, including Google Maps for navigation, Google Assistant for voice commands, and the Google Play Store for apps. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are supported, and the Digital Key Plus feature allows owners to use an iPhone, Apple Watch, or Android phone to unlock and start the car.

Volvo states that the ES90 will have the quietest cabin ever produced by the brand. Customers can choose from three audio systems, including a top-tier Bowers & Wilkins setup with 25 speakers, 1,610 watts of amplification, Dolby Atmos playback and Volvo’s new Abbey Road Studio Mode.

    Availability

The 2026 Volvo ES90 will be the sixth all-electric vehicle in the automaker’s lineup, joining the EX40, EC40, EX30, EM90, and EX90. European drivers can begin ordering the new ES90 now. Reservations for other markets will open later this year and into 2026. North American availability is to be determined.
