Mercedes-Benz has introduced the third-generation CLA, a model that will offer both hybrid and fully electric powertrains. The electric variants boast up to 349 horsepower and WLTP ranges extending from 418 to 492 miles.

While the exterior design is evolutionary, the CLA’s cabin embraces a minimalist aesthetic, heavily incorporating screens. The original Mercedes CLA played a pioneer role in the affordable four-door coupe market, and this third-generation model builds on that legacy. Although the overall design is not a radical departure, the new electric versions feature a unique ‘radiant face panel’ that replaces the traditional single-bar grille. This panel includes an illuminated star emblem complemented by 142 individually lit mini-stars.

Buyers will also notice sweptback headlights connected by a thin, illuminated strip. LED headlights come standard, but the optional Multibeam LED headlights are notable for their daytime running light signature, which takes the form of the Mercedes-Benz star.
The rest of the car is more conventionally styled, with streamlined bodywork, available flush-mounted door handles, and a class-leading drag coefficient starting at 0.21. Starry taillights and aerodynamically optimized wheels, available in sizes from 17 to 19 inches, complete the exterior design. Customers will be able to choose from various option packages including AMG Line, AMG Line Plus, and Night packages.
Like most new vehicles these days, the Mercedes CLA has grown in size. The new model is 185.9 inches (4,722 mm) long, which is an increase of 1.6 inches (41 mm). The wheelbase has also been extended by 2.4 inches (61 mm), reaching 109.8 inches (2,789 mm), which provides a bit more legroom in the front. However, rear seat legroom has decreased to 33.6 inches (853 mm).
A Screen-Heavy Interior
Remember the cool, innovative interior of the original Mercedes CLS? Its blend of flowing wood trim and stylish leather was truly unforgettable. Comparing that to the new CLA, the interior appears to have a more minimalist, modern design. The available MBUX Superscreen, which combines a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a distinct 14-inch infotainment system, and a 14-inch front passenger display, is a key interior feature.
Those who opt out of the Superscreen will still find a “trim element with a star pattern graphic.” As for standard features, Mercedes has confirmed that all models will be equipped with a leather-wrapped sport steering wheel, heated power front seats, a panoramic fixed glass roof, and a single-zone climate control system. Customers can also choose from trim options such as brushed aluminum, open-pore wood, or a “Gold Anthracite anodized look.”
While rear legroom is a bit cramped, the CLA EV has a frunk with 2.5 cubic feet (71 liters) of cargo space. That’s in addition to the 14.3 cubic feet (405 liters) of space in the trunk.
Focusing on the technological aspects, the CLA will run the all-new Mercedes-Benz Operating System. This represents the fourth generation of the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment system and integrates artificial intelligence from both Microsoft and Google. Mercedes emphasized the AI capabilities, highlighting a new MBUX Virtual Assistant designed to “transform the relationship between vehicle and driver” using generative AI. This assistant presents as a “living avatar” in the form of a Mercedes star. The system also uses ChatGPT4o and Microsoft Bing, as well as Google Gemini, which is specifically used for navigation queries because the CLA’s “navigation experience is based on Google Maps.”
Electric and Hybrid Powertrains
At launch, the CLA will be available in two electric variants: the CLA 250+ with EQ Technology and the CLA 350 4MATIC with EQ Technology. The CLA 250+ has a rear-mounted motor producing 268 horsepower (200 kW / 272 PS) and 247 lb-ft (335 Nm) of torque. This model can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph (0-96 km/h) in approximately 6.6 seconds, with an electronically limited top speed of 130 mph (209 km/h). Drivers can expect a WLTP range of 431-492 miles (694-792 km).
The CLA 350 4MATIC with EQ Technology is positioned as the performance model, featuring a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system with a combined output of 349 horsepower (260 kW / 354 PS) and 380 lb-ft (515 Nm) of torque. This allows for a 0-60 mph (96 km/h) acceleration time of 4.8 seconds. The top speed remains the same, but the range is slightly reduced to 418-479 miles (672-771 km).
Both electric models use an 85 kWh lithium-ion battery pack and an 800-volt electric architecture. They support DC fast charging up to 320 kW, allowing for up to 202 miles (325 km) of range after a ten-minute charge.
A hybrid variant is also planned, targeting customers who aren’t quite ready to go fully electric. Though details are limited, Mercedes confirmed that the hybrid will offer two power outputs, and will be available in both front-wheel and all-wheel drive. The hybrid models are expected to feature a 1.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine, a 1.3 kWh battery, 48-volt technology, and an electric motor integrated into an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission.
