Thor’s Pinzgauer, ‘Zebra’ Mustang, Ant-Man’s Van, and More Up for Auction
If you’re a fan of movies and unique cars, then prepare to be excited. The Petersen Automotive Museum is about to host an auction featuring an array of vehicles that have graced the silver screen. From cars fit for a god to vans that have shrunk to sub-atomic sizes, this auction offers a rare opportunity to own a piece of movie history.
This isn’t just any prop car auction; it’s a chance to snag some seriously cool movie memorabilia. Among the highlights are vehicles from popular action films, including one of John Wick’s muscle cars and a Mustang that stands out from the herd.
Here are some of the star cars heading to the Propstore Entertainment Memorabilia Live Auction.
In the 2011 film “Thor,” Chris Hemsworth’s character is exiled to the New Mexico desert. There, he’s discovered by Natalie Portman. The vehicle used in the film to explore the desert was a 1973 Pinzgauer 710k. The rig, built by Steyr-Daimler-Puch, was named after a breed of cattle.
This particular Pinzgauer is a light tan color and has been upgraded for cinematic purposes. The front bumper and winch appear to be legit, and there are many LED lights mounted on the roof. A gas can in the back adds to its authenticity. The listing notes that it is not currently functional, but the simple engine should be easy to get running.
If the ruggedness of off-roading isn’t for you, the 1973 Ford Econoline from “Ant-Man” may be more your style. This is the van owned by Michael Pena’s character, Luis. Paul Rudd, as Scott Lang, extensively uses the van on-screen. This is one of two vans used in the production, according to the prop car auction listing. They’re unsure if it’s a 302 V8 or a 351, though the VIN suggests the smaller one.
Also up for grabs is the classic Oldsmobile Cutlass from “John Wick: Chapter 4.” In a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment, this is the car that hits Keanu Reeves in front of a cafe in Paris. It returns almost immediately, with henchmen smashing Keanu into a van before a brutal dispatching.
Lastly, there’s a much older car with a more interesting build: a 1965 Ford Mustang transformed by movie and hot rod legend George Barris into a targa-top “Zebra” Mustang. It’s covered with fake zebra fur, and it’s the only car like this that Barris built. It was made for 1965’s “Marriage on the Rocks,” starring Frank Sinatra, Deborah Kerr, and Dean Martin.
This unique Mustang is expected to be the big ticket, with an estimated value between $100,000 and $200,000.
The Propstore Entertainment Memorabilia Live Auction will be in-person on March 26 at the Petersen Museum in L.A. and online until the 28th. If you’ve always dreamed of owning a piece of your favorite film, now is your chance!
