In the rural outskirts of Hiroshima, a Japanese startup is spearheading the country’s electric vehicle revolution with the most compact and affordable car on the market. KG Motors has designed a battery-powered, single-seater vehicle that bears more resemblance to a cutting-edge golf cart than a conventional EV or traditional automobile. Remarkably, over half of the 3,300 units slated for delivery by March 2027 have already been pre-ordered by customers.
This achievement puts KG Motors on track to outsell Toyota Motor, the world’s largest automaker, in Japan’s EV market for 2024. Toyota managed to shift around 2,000 electric vehicles in the entire year. In a market where EVs remain a rarity, KG Motors is challenging the prevailing notion that bigger vehicles are inherently better.
The success of KG Motors highlights a significant shift in consumer preferences towards more practical and environmentally friendly transportation solutions. Their innovative approach demonstrates that compact EVs can meet the specific needs of local markets, particularly in rural areas where larger vehicles may be less practical.
