Toyota Unveils Trio of New EVs for Europe, Including a Pickup
Despite Chairman Akio Toyoda’s predictions that electric vehicles won’t dominate the market, Toyota is expanding its commitment to the EV sector. The Japanese automaker is gearing up to launch three new electric vehicles in Europe by late 2026, adding to its existing lineup. The announcement highlights Toyota’s recognition of the growing demand for EVs, even if they don’t capture the majority of the market.
During the Kenshiki forum held in Brussels, Toyota showcased the C-HR+, alongside an updated bZ4X and the small Urban Cruiser. While details remain scarce, the company confirmed that one of the upcoming EVs will be a pickup truck. This new offering will join the growing number of electric pickup trucks available around the world.
Although specific details about the pickup are under wraps, industry speculation centers around the EPU concept. Unveiled in October 2023, the EPU concept boasts a five-seat, mid-size design with a monocoque, dual-cab body. Its dimensions are approximately 200.0 inches long, 75.1 inches wide, and 67.3 inches tall. This concept vehicle hints at a potential production model that could soon be available to consumers.
Another potential model could be the Land Cruiser Se. The concept vehicle was presented at the event in Belgium which suggests it will be soon ready for production. The event also showcased the conceptual electric SUV, which leads to the speculation that a production model is inching closer.
The specific identity of the other SUV remains a mystery, but Toyota has confirmed it will be a Toyota-branded vehicle, not a Lexus. Additionally, Toyota will produce a three-row electric SUV at its Georgetown, Kentucky plant. Considering its location, it seems unlikely to be the SUV destined for the European market, unless assembled elsewhere.
Like the Urban Cruiser and the C-HR+, the three new Europe-bound electric vehicles will not use the bZ branding. This move signifies Toyota’s shift away from the “Beyond Zero” naming strategy. Toyota is making a strategic move to increase its foothold in the rapidly evolving EV market while also offering a diverse range of vehicles to consumers.
