Toyota Unveils bZ7 Electric Sedan to Challenge Rivals in China
Toyota has officially launched its latest addition to the bZ electric vehicle range with the bZ7, a large sedan developed in collaboration with its Chinese partner GAC. The new model made its debut at the 2025 Shanghai Motor Show and is expected to compete directly with the Tesla Model S and Chinese competitors like the BYD Han.
The production-ready 2025 Toyota bZ7 is set to utilize BYD’s ‘Blade’ lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery technology. While full specifications are yet to be released, the bZ7 is described as a large-sized sedan exceeding five meters in length, making it larger than the Toyota Camry. The vehicle is anticipated to go on sale in China later this year alongside other Toyota bZ models such as the bZ3 and bZ5.
Inside, the Toyota bZ7 features larger screens, leather-appointed upholstery, and woodgrain trims across the dashboard. Toyota promises advanced intelligent technology, including a smart cockpit and driving support systems. The exterior design incorporates slimline, angular front headlights and a high-set rear tail-light, with elements borrowed from the new Toyota Prius, such as the full-width front light bar.
The bZ7 is part of Toyota’s strategy to ramp up its electric car efforts in China to compete with local rivals. Sedans, particularly electric ones, remain popular in the Chinese market, and the bZ7 is expected to be among the contenders alongside other premium electric vehicles like the Nissan N7.
While the bZ7 is likely to remain exclusive to China for now, with the bZ4X being the only global bZ model currently sold in Australia, the development demonstrates Toyota’s commitment to expanding its electric vehicle lineup in key markets.
