Toyota has announced a recall affecting approximately 443,000 Tundra pickups from model years 2022-2025 due to a potential issue with their reverse lights. Moisture can enter the reverse lights and cause a short circuit, which could lead to the lights not functioning properly. This is a safety concern as other vehicles may not be aware that a Tundra is backing up, and Toyota warns that the driver’s view to the rear can be limited without the lights, potentially triggering an accident.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not yet published the recall, although Toyota frequently announces safety actions before the government. To address the issue, dealers will replace the reverse lamps with an improved design and inspect the wiring for corrosion, replacing it if necessary. As required by law, dealers will not charge for these recall repairs.
This recall highlights a common issue in the automotive industry where automakers recall many cars to fix safety defects, sometimes more than once. While automakers strive to notify all owners to bring their vehicles in for repair, they often don’t reach every owner. Millions of vehicles on American roads currently need free recall repairs.
