Toyota has announced the upcoming reveal of a new electric vehicle (EV) on March 12. According to the automaker, this new EV will be “surprising.”
A recent teaser image and 30-second video released by Toyota offer limited visual details. The shadowy silhouette appears to be the production version of the bZ Compact Crossover concept, initially showcased in 2022. Toyota has also kept other specifics to a minimum.
“Toyota to reveal all-new exciting and surprising battery electric vehicle,” the company stated in a press release. “Featuring a sleek and stylish coupe design combined with elevated driving dynamics and surprising space, comfort & versatility, this all-new battery electric model is inspired by Toyota’s heritage of creating products with strong emotional appeal that bring wider choice to customers. Stay tuned for the reveal on March 12, 2025, 00:01am CET (10:01am AEDT).”
Although Toyota has been discreet about the specifics of this new EV, a smaller electric SUV is confirmed and will be positioned below the bZ4X medium-sized SUV. The BZ Compact Crossover concept had its initial reveal back in 2022. Based on the silhouette in the teaser, Toyota seems to have preserved the original concept’s sleek design, highlighted by the high-mounted taillights and sloped rear window, alongside the prominent wheel arches extending onto the hood area.
This four-door, small SUV will likely have a long wheelbase for its size. It is expected to compete with vehicles like the Zeekr X, the Volvo EX30, and the Geely G6. While Toyota hasn’t released any specifications for the EV, Australian consumers can anticipate a similar range of grades and motor variants as the bZ4X.
The bZ4X, positioned as a competitor to the Tesla Model Y, is equipped with a 71.4kWh battery and is available in both single-motor and dual-motor configurations, providing driving ranges of up to 436km and 411km respectively. This upcoming EV will be Toyota’s third global electric vehicle launch, following the bZ4X and the Urban Cruiser small SUV. While the bZ4X launched in Australia in 2024, the Urban Cruiser is currently only available in Europe, the United Kingdom, and various other international markets.
Regarding the price of the new Toyota EV, no details have yet been released. However, it is expected to be priced lower than the entry-level bZ4X, which has a list price of $66,000.
More details about the new EV will be announced on March 12 at 10am AEDT, so stay tuned for the full reveal.
