A driver escaped unharmed Thursday afternoon when his pickup truck plunged off the edge of the Dysart’s Great Harbor Marina pier in Southwest Harbor, Maine. The incident occurred after a reported brake failure on Apple Lane, causing the vehicle to roll down the incline and into the water.
The driver, identified as 22-year-old Wyatt Lawson of Bernard, was able to evacuate the vehicle immediately after it landed in the low-tide mud, suffering only minor scrapes to his hands. The truck fell approximately 20 feet before coming to rest on a floating walkway.
Recovery efforts involved DC Towing, the Southwest Harbor Fire Department, and the Southwest Harbor Police Department. The truck was successfully removed from the water and placed on a barge owned by Cody Seavey. The fire department deployed an absorbent boom at the scene to contain any potential fluid leaks.
Slushy conditions on the ground were also cited as a contributing factor in the accident.
