The UK’s production of new cars and vans plummeted to its lowest April level since 1952, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). The organization reported that only 59,203 vehicles left factories in April, marking a significant decline in the industry’s output. Car production, which constitutes the majority of the UK’s vehicle output, dropped by 8.6%.
The SMMT noted that this figure is the lowest for any April since 1952, when 53,517 vehicles were produced, with the exception of 2020 when production was severely impacted by the Covid pandemic, resulting in only 197 vehicles being manufactured.
