UPS has partnered with Arrival to trial their new electric delivery van, a 3.5-tonne vehicle capable of over 150 miles per charge. The van’s design incorporates lightweight composite materials and features a large windscreen for improved visibility of pedestrians and cyclists. The UPS-branded vans will be tested in London and Paris before a decision is made on further orders. Various sizes are available, including 3.5-tonne and 7.5-tonne models. UPS has been working with Arrival for two years and the pilot vehicles are built to UPS specifications. The vans include advanced driver assist features that could enhance safety and reduce driver fatigue, although some drivers might view these as intrusive monitoring systems.
The electric van is designed with compact wheels that maximize load space, making it practical for urban deliveries. UPS has previously explored electric transport, having used it as far back as the 1930s, and has recently ordered 125 Tesla semi trucks.
