The unmarked police car was left with £10,000-worth of damage
A 26-year-old man from Cambridgeshire has been given a suspended prison sentence and banned from driving for two years after ramming a police car multiple times during a chase. George Bamsey of Tudor Road, Godmanchester, was sentenced at Lincoln Crown Court on Friday to 16 months in prison for dangerous driving and other related offenses. The sentence was suspended for two years. The incident occurred on July 28 last year when Lincolnshire Police pursued two vans on the A52 at Swaton, near Sleaford. Bamsey, driving a Ford Transit van, stopped suddenly and reversed into an unmarked police car three times before speeding away at over 60mph in a 30mph zone. He later attempted to ram the police car four more times before crashing. The police found stolen copper piping and cabling in the van, which had been taken from a building site in Cambridgeshire. Bamsey pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including dangerous driving, handling stolen goods, and driving while disqualified. The police car sustained £10,000 worth of damage. PC Chris Windsor-Beck from Lincolnshire Police said the incident demonstrated the risks officers take to keep people and property safe.

    Incident Details

The van was captured being rammed into the police car before it crashed
During the early hours of the chase, police caught up with the two vans – a Ford Transit and a Vauxhall Vivaro. Both drivers turned off the A52, and the Transit van, driven by Bamsey, overtook the Vivaro before speeding off. The dangerous driving resulted in significant damage to the police vehicle and posed a serious risk to the officers involved. Bamsey’s actions were captured on camera, showing the van being rammed into the police car before it crashed.

    Aftermath and Sentence

In addition to the 16-month prison sentence for dangerous driving, Bamsey received a four-month sentence for handling stolen goods. Both sentences were suspended for two years. The court also imposed a two-year driving ban on Bamsey. The sentencing reflects the severity of Bamsey’s actions and the risks he posed to others during the incident.
