March 5 (UPI) — An Austrian orchestra that creates its instruments entirely from fresh vegetables has been awarded a Guinness World Record. The group, known as The Vegetable Orchestra, has performed 344 concerts over 27 years.
The ensemble’s unusual instrumentation includes instruments such as flutes carved from carrots, a cello made from pumpkins, and percussion made from various vegetables. The orchestra not only creates the instruments but also prepares them specifically for each performance, ensuring that the instruments are in peak condition to produce the required sounds. Their concerts involve not only the performance but also the creation of the instruments live on stage, offering a unique visual element to their performances.
The Vegetable Orchestra, formed in 1998 in Vienna, Austria, has gained international recognition for its innovative approach to music. The orchestra members also compost the instruments after each performance, completing the cycle in a sustainable way, and reinforcing their commitment to being on the cutting edge of environmental concerns. The group has toured extensively, playing in concert halls, festivals, and unusual venues, bringing their unique sounds to audiences worldwide.
The Guinness World Record recognizes the group’s dedication to its unusual art form, as well as establishing its place as a unique and enduring musical act.
