Volkswagen’s New California Camper Van Challenges Ford Nugget with Advanced Features
Volkswagen has finally brought its plug-in hybrid California camper van to the UK market, giving the Ford Nugget some serious competition. The new California boasts an improved eHybrid 4Motion powertrain, increased electric driving range, and various trim options.

The wait for Volkswagen’s plug-in hybrid California was worth it, as it now surpasses its competitors with its advanced technology. The new eHybrid system features a larger battery, providing an 80% increase in electric driving range to 54 miles (87 km, WLTP). The three-motor configuration brings integrated 4Motion all-wheel-drive and boosts total system output to 241 hp, outdoing the Ford Nugget’s 229-hp dual-motor front-wheel-drive PHEV with an estimated 35-mile (56-km) range.
Pricing and Trim Options
Volkswagen UK has announced pricing for the California PHEV lineup:
- California Beach eHybrid 4Motion: £71,295 (approx. US$94,925)
- California Coast: £78,495 ($104,500)
- California Ocean: £85,395 ($113,700)
All prices include VAT. The Beach trim comes with a basic slide-out mini-kitchen and a full-width double bed, while the Coast and Ocean trims feature a more comprehensive indoor/outdoor-access side kitchen.

Comparison with Ford Nugget
While Ford UK has yet to release PHEV pricing for the Nugget, Volkswagen already has an edge in terms of powertrain and pricing for ICE models. The four-seat Volkswagen California Coast starts at £70,681, which is lower than the cheapest Ford Nugget camper van at £77,953.

The Ford Nugget has its strengths, including a newly added toilet room feature and innovative three-room design. However, Volkswagen’s advanced powertrain and competitive pricing give it an initial advantage in the UK hybrid camper van market.
