Volkswagen ID. Buzz: America’s Only Electric Minivan
The Volkswagen ID. Buzz is making waves as the sole fully electric minivan available in the United States market. With seating for up to seven passengers, depending on the chosen model and trim level, the 2025 ID. Buzz is set to hit U.S. dealerships in the fall of 2024.
Performance and Powertrain
The ID. Buzz will be offered in three standard trim packages, plus an exclusive 1st Edition model available at launch. Rear-wheel-drive variants will produce 282 horsepower, while all-wheel-drive models will boost power to 335 horsepower. The minivan features a fast-charging lithium-ion battery capable of charging from 5% to 80% in just 30 minutes with maximum charging speeds.
Range and Battery
While the European version has an estimated range of around 257 miles using the Euro-specific testing method with a 77-kWh battery, U.S. models are expected to feature a larger 91-kWh battery. This upgrade suggests the American version may have an improved range compared to its European counterpart, though official EPA testing has not been conducted as of mid-2024.
Features and Specifications
The ID. Buzz is expected to bring several convenience and style features from its European counterpart to the U.S. market. Some anticipated features include expansive cargo space and over two dozen driver assistance features, such as parking assist. The minivan stands out from traditional models with its height – around 8 inches taller than many other vans and some SUVs. This additional height provides ample cargo space even without stowable rear seats when the seats are folded down.
Alternative Option: Chrysler Pacifica Plug-in Hybrid
For those considering a plug-in hybrid minivan, the Chrysler Pacifica Plug-in Hybrid remains an alternative choice in the U.S. market.
