Volkswagen Multivan Life 2025 Review
Volkswagen’s seventh-generation Multivan has migrated to a passenger-car platform, marking a significant shift in its approach while maintaining its renowned versatility. The new Multivan Life is available in two versions: Short Wheelbase (SWB) for $75,990 and Long Wheelbase (LWB) for $78,990, both before on-road costs.
The Multivan Life is powered by a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine producing 110kW and 360Nm, paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. While its 0-100km/h time of 11.6 seconds is leisurely, it handles urban driving with ease and maintains composure on the freeway. However, it struggles with urgent acceleration due to its substantial kerb weight of over 2058kg and the H-rated 235/55R17 Kumho Ecsta tyres.
The diesel drivetrain remains impressively subdued, outperforming dual-cab diesels in refinement. The ride quality, while not plush, is more absorbent than the ID.Buzz and better than most commercial vehicles. However, it often thumps over bumps and transmits more noise than ideal. Adaptive dampers, available in other markets, might address this issue.
The steering is initially light and lacking in feel, with just under 3.0 turns lock-to-lock and a 12.1m turning circle. Yet, it becomes more engaging when cornering, revealing its Euro-express origins with confident balance.
The Multivan excels in occupant space, seat comfort, and interior versatility. Every seating position now features individual seats with adjustable armrests, even in the second and third rows. The second- and third-row buckets are on full-length rails, allowing infinite positioning and unique configurations. The optional $690 Conference Package enables rear-facing second-row seats.
Luggage space is vast, with 469 litres behind the third row, 1844 litres behind the second row, and up to 4053 litres with the rear seats removed. The options list is extensive, and a fully loaded LWB can exceed $105,000 before on-road costs. Standard safety features include adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, and a five-star ANCAP rating.
The Multivan Life is not the value-for-money leader like the ID.4 Pro, but its pricing starts near where the Kia Carnival’s tops out. Volkswagen’s target audience values versatility and lifestyle adaptability, making the Multivan a compelling choice despite its premium pricing.
