Volkswagen is recalling thousands of its ID. Buzz electric cars due to a design issue with the rear seats being too wide. The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently issued a recall notice stating that the third row of seats in the 2025 Volkswagen ID.Buzz does not comply with motor vehicle safety standards.
The vehicle is designed with seven seats divided into three rows in a 2-3-2 configuration. While the third row is spacious enough to accommodate three passengers, only two seat belts are provided, posing a potential safety risk in the event of an accident. The width of the back seat “exceeded the maximum value” allowed, according to the recall report.
The number of vehicles affected by the ID.Buzz recall is 5,637 in the United States and 771 in Canada. These vehicles were manufactured in Hanover, Germany, from September 2024 to February 2025. Owners will receive official notice on June 20, and a stop-sale order has been issued for both inventory and used vehicles.

Volkswagen has identified a fix, offering owners a free seat-width adjustment cover. The Volkswagen ID. Buzz is a modern take on the classic German Bus or Van of the 1960s and 1970s, built on Volkswagen’s MEB platform with an exceptionally spacious interior.
