Volkswagen has introduced the seventh generation of its Transporter van, designated the T7. The new model boasts updated styling, increased dimensions, and a range of powertrain choices. Sadly for U.S. consumers, the T7 won’t be available stateside.

While Americans won’t see the T7 in dealerships, it’s designed to compete with the Ford Transit. The Transporter T7 showcases significant dimensional changes compared to its predecessor. It’s 5.7 inches longer, 5.0 inches wider, and the wheelbase has stretched by 3.8 inches.

Customers will find a varied selection of powertrains. The T7 offers a choice of three diesel engines, the plug-in-hybrid setup, and three electric powertrains. The diesel engines offer between 109 and 168 horsepower. The electric options range from 134 to 282 hp, and the plug-in hybrid is rated at 229 hp. Front-wheel drive is standard on the diesel and the hybrid models, while the more powerful diesel variants can be upgraded with all-wheel drive.
Like other vans in its class, the Transporter T7 will be offered in multiple configurations, including passenger and cargo versions. The passenger-focused models include the Kombi and the more premium Caravelle, which can seat up to nine passengers. Panel van options are available for transporting goods. Further customization options include an extended wheelbase and a higher roof. Pricing has not yet been released.
