Volkswagen’s Zwickau Plant Achieves Significant Milestone in Electric Vehicle Production
The Volkswagen plant in Zwickau, Germany, has reached a significant milestone in its production history, rolling out its one millionth electric vehicle. The milestone vehicle is an ID.3 GTX Performance in Kings Red Metallic, which will be delivered to a customer in Bavaria.
After approximately five and a half years of all-electric vehicle production, the Zwickau plant has achieved this impressive feat. The plant, which produces six electric models across three Group brands – Volkswagen, Audi, and Cupra – has been at the forefront of Volkswagen’s transition to electric mobility.
“One million electric cars produced is a strong achievement by the workforce,” said Danny Auerswald, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Sachsen GmbH. “Despite numerous challenges in recent years, the team has always delivered the models on time, reliably, and in high quality.”
The Zwickau plant began its transition to electric vehicle production in November 2019 with the launch of the ID.3, the Volkswagen Group’s first model based on the modular electric drive matrix (MEB). Since then, the plant has successfully introduced five more electric models, completing its transformation into a purely electric multi-brand location.
The achievement is significant not only for the plant but also for the Volkswagen Group’s overall electric vehicle strategy. Almost every second electric car registered by the Volkswagen Group worldwide comes from Zwickau, with 2.3 million MEB vehicles delivered to customers globally across all Group brands.
As the plant looks to the future, it is exploring new opportunities in the circular economy, which could provide a second strategic pillar for the location. “We see great opportunities for entering the circular economy topic,” said Uwe Kunstmann, Chairman of the General Works Council of Volkswagen Sachsen GmbH. “This would give us a second strategic pillar and once again play a pioneering role for the Group.”
The Zwickau plant’s success in electric vehicle production is a testament to its adaptability and the hard work of its workforce. With over seven million vehicles produced since Volkswagen took over the site in 1990, the plant continues to play a crucial role in the company’s electric mobility strategy.
