Volvo’s New Electric Sedan: The ES90
Volvo has officially introduced its all-electric ES90 sedan, a new contender in the rapidly expanding EV market. The vehicle combines a focus on elegant design with practical features and a long driving range, with the potential to rival models like the BMW i5.

The Volvo ES90 aims to offer a blend of elegance, practicality, and performance.
Design and Features
The ES90 showcases Volvo’s signature design language with a streamlined profile, a raised ride height, and a focus on aerodynamic efficiency. The front features the familiar ‘Thor’s Hammer’ headlight design, and the rear integrates distinctive C-shaped LED taillights with a dynamic light sequence.
Customers will have a choice of seven exterior colors and wheel sizes ranging from 20 to 22 inches. Inside, the ES90 emphasizes premium materials and ergonomic design. A 3.1-meter wheelbase provides ample legroom for rear passengers, and a panoramic roof with UV protection and adjustable transparency enhances the interior ambiance. The vehicle also includes a four-zone climate system with an advanced air purifier capable of filtering a significant percentage of PM 2.5 particulates and eliminating allergens.
For a refined in-cabin experience, Volvo has prioritized sound insulation, aiming for one of its quietest vehicles. The top-tier audio system is a Bowers & Wilkins setup with 25 speakers, Dolby Atmos, and a mode that simulates the acoustics of Abbey Road Studios.
Performance and Technology
The ES90 is the first Volvo model to implement 800V technology, significantly boosting efficiency and charging speeds. It supports fast charging up to 350 kW, allowing the vehicle to add 300 kilometers of range in approximately 10 minutes. The total WLTP-rated range reaches up to 700 kilometers.
The ES90 is built on Volvo’s SPA2 platform and incorporates over-the-air updates to improve performance and safety features over time. The infotainment system features a 14.5-inch center display with Google built-in services, offering Google Maps and Google Assistant integration. The Snapdragon Cockpit Platform powers the system and provides seamless connectivity and a 3D 360-degree camera view for parking assistance.
Safety Features
Safety remains a core tenet of Volvo’s design. The ES90 is equipped with a reinforced safety cage and an array of sensors, including five radars, seven cameras, and a lidar system from Luminar Technologies. The driver monitoring system detects when attention is diverted from the road and can intervene if necessary. Additional safety features include an alert system for approaching cyclists when opening doors and an occupant sensing system to prevent accidental entrapment.
Will it Come to India?
The ES90 is currently launching in select European markets, including Germany, France, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. Volvo has indicated plans to expand availability to additional markets throughout 2025 and 2026. Whether the ES90 will be available in India remains to be seen.
