Volvo Previews Cutting-Edge ES90 Electric Sedan
Volvo is gearing up to unveil its new flagship electric sedan, the ES90, with a debut scheduled for March 5, 2025. The Swedish automaker has offered a sneak peek, touting the ES90 as “one of the most technically advanced cars on the market today.” The vehicle is poised to be Volvo’s most technologically advanced car yet.

At the heart of the ES90’s advanced capabilities are dual NVIDIA Drive AGX Orin computers. This marks the first time Volvo has incorporated this technology, giving the ES90 unmatched computing power relative to previous models. NVIDIA’s in-vehicle computer platform is capable of around 508 trillion operations per second (TOPS). As a point of reference, the PlayStation 5 Pro offers 16.7 trillion, an impressive capability which still only accounts for around 3% of the ES90’s processing power.

This represents an eightfold improvement in computing power compared to current Volvo models. In conjunction with Volvo’s Superset tech stack, the electric sedan will be a “truly software-defined car,” which Volvo believes will enhance safety and efficiency.
According to Anders Bell, Volvo’s chief engineer, “The Volvo ES90 is one of the most technically advanced cars on the market today.” He also noted that the car will improve over time with regular over-the-air (OTA) updates, a standard feature for all new Volvo models based on the Superset platform.
The new EV features an array of sensors to support advanced safety and driver assistance functions. These include a lidar, five radars, eight cameras, and twelve ultrasonic sensors. Volvo’s “Safe Space Technology” is designed to detect and avoid other vehicles, pedestrians, and obstacles, even in low-light conditions.
The ES90 will be the company’s second EV, after the three-row EX90 SUV, and built on the Superset tech stack. Similar to the ES90, Volvo plans to upgrade the EX90 with the dual NVIDIA Drive AGX Orin computers, with this upgrade being made available at no cost to existing EX90 owners.
In the released preview images, the ES90’s silhouette bears a resemblance to the existing S90 hybrid sedan. The teaser images also point to a more contemporary design, with styling cues borrowed from the EX90, including the adoption of upright taillights.
The unveiling of the Volvo ES90 is scheduled for March 5, 2025. Interested viewers can watch the live-stream event to get the full details as they are released.
