2025 Volvo EX40: A Name Change with Upgrades
Volvo is making a clear distinction between its internal-combustion and electric vehicle models. The company has renamed the XC40 Recharge the EX40 for the 2025 model year. Along with the new designation, the compact luxury SUV receives some enhancements, including a slightly larger battery pack for some trims, offering a few more miles of range.

The EX40 will be available in three trim levels: Core, Plus, and Ultra. Each trim can be equipped with either a Single Motor or a more potent Twin Motor configuration.
The Twin Motor models boast 402 horsepower and 494 pound-feet of torque. In recent testing, the EX40 Twin Motor Ultra accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in a brisk 4.1 seconds.
For 2025, the Twin Motor versions also get a battery pack with slightly increased capacity. While the Single Motor versions had marginally larger batteries in 2024, both powertrains now use the same 79.0-kWh packs.
The EPA’s estimated range for the Twin Motor version has increased by six miles, bringing the total to 260 miles, although the updated model has not yet undergone Car and Driver’s 75-mph range test.
