Volvo’s ES90 Electric Sedan: A Glimpse into the Future
Volvo is gearing up to launch its flagship electric sedan, the ES90, with a debut just around the corner. The company is touting the new ES90 as “one of the most technically advanced cars on the market today.” This claim is backed by some serious tech, including dual NVIDIA Drive AGX Orin computers, making it the most advanced Volvo car yet.

Computing Powerhouse
The ES90 will be Volvo’s first vehicle to feature dual NVIDIA Drive AGX Orin computers. This setup provides a significant boost in computing capacity. How significant? NVIDIA’s in-vehicle computer platform delivers approximately 508 trillion operations per second (TOPS). To put that in perspective, even the most powerful PlayStation (PlayStation 5 Pro) has a fraction of the computing power.

That’s an eightfold improvement over the computing capacity of previous Volvo models. This, combined with Volvo’s Superset tech stack, positions the electric sedan as a “truly software-defined car,” leading to improved efficiency and safety features.
Advanced Technology and Safety
The ES90 is packed with a suite of sensors. It includes:
- A lidar
- Five radars
- Eight cameras
- Twelve ultrasonic sensors
These components enable advanced safety and driver assistance functions. A key safety feature, called “Safe Space Technology,” is designed to detect and avoid hazards, including other vehicles and pedestrians, even in low-light conditions.

Software-Defined Car
The integration of Superset tech means that the ES90 is a software-defined car. This allows for regular over-the-air (OTA) updates, which are now standard across all Volvo models. This means the car’s features and capabilities can improve over time through software enhancements delivered wirelessly.

Design and Launch
The ES90 follows the EX90 SUV as the second EV built on the Superset tech stack. The design hints at a modern aesthetic, featuring elements borrowed from the EX90, such as upright tail lights. The ES90’s profile resembles that of the S90 sedan.

Volvo plans to upgrade the EX90 with the same NVIDIA Drive AGX Orin computers, and existing EX90 customers will receive the upgrade at no extra cost. The Volvo ES90 will be unveiled on March 5, 2025.
