Walmart is integrating Chevrolet BrightDrop 400 electric vans into its U.S. home delivery fleet, marking a significant expansion of its electric vehicle (EV) adoption. The vans will be deployed in seven regions – Austin, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, northwest Arkansas, Orlando, and the San Francisco Bay Area – before the end of 2024, according to a General Motors press release. These vehicles will support Walmart’s InHome service, which delivers groceries from stores to customers’ homes in nearby areas. The decision follows a successful pilot program where employees praised the vans for their driver aids, automated features like automatic-closing doors, and ease of entry and exit. The BrightDrop 400, the shorter-wheelbase version of the BrightDrop series, offers an estimated 159 miles of range with its standard battery pack and up to 272 miles with an optional larger pack. The vans share the same Ultium component set as GM’s current generation of electric passenger vehicles. Originally launched as a separate brand in January 2021, BrightDrop was folded into Chevrolet in August 2024, with production continuing at GM’s CAMI Assembly plant in Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada. This move is part of Walmart’s ongoing commitment to electric vehicles, having previously ordered 4,500 electric vans from Canoo in 2022 and announcing its own EV charging network in 2023. Some Walmart stores also host Electrify America charging stations, further supporting their EV infrastructure.
