World EV Day: A Look at Desirable Electric Cars

Today is World EV (electric vehicle) Day, a date that grows in significance with each passing year as the global automotive industry progressively embraces cleaner forms of mobility. Each year witnesses the launch of new EVs worldwide, some of which are redefining automotive technology. Let’s examine some of the most sought-after electric cars currently available in international markets, which we would love to see introduced on Indian roads in the future.

    Tesla Model Y

Given the current buzz surrounding Tesla’s potential entry into the Indian car market, it’s only fitting that we start with one of its most popular models: the Tesla Model Y.

The Tesla Model Y boasts a long-range battery, offering up to 330 miles (531 km) on a single charge. It features dual-motor all-wheel drive, delivering impressive performance with a 0-100 kmph acceleration time of just 3.5 seconds in the Performance variant. Its key selling points include a spacious cabin, advanced autopilot features, and access to Tesla’s extensive Supercharger network.

    Ford Mustang Mach-E

This selection may spark debate among purists, considering the iconic Mustang branding is now on a fully electric vehicle. However, the Mach-E successfully incorporates many elements from the classic muscle car, honoring the Mustang legacy. More importantly, its performance certainly lives up to the name.

The Mustang Mach-E offers battery options ranging from 70 kWh (Standard Range) to 91 kWh (Extended Range), providing up to 312 miles (502 km) of range. It comes in either single-motor RWD or dual-motor AWD configurations, with the GT Performance Edition generating 480 hp and 634 lb-ft of torque, achieving 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds.

    Tesla Cybertruck

Another Tesla model often in the headlines is the Cybertruck. Its unique, futuristic design makes it appear to have come straight from a sci-fi movie.

The Tesla Cybertruck offers battery options that provide a range of up to 340 miles (547 km). It is available in rear-wheel drive (RWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) variants, with the AWD model producing 600 hp. The Cyberbeast variant boasts an impressive 845 hp, accelerating from 0-60 mph in a mere 2.6 seconds, offering exceptional off-road and towing capabilities.

    Volkswagen ID.2All

The ID.2all stands out for several reasons, but primarily because it evokes the beloved Volkswagen Polo. The ID.2all can be considered an all-electric equivalent to the Polo. Given the popularity of the Polo in India, the ID.2all would likely be a hit.

The electric hatchback will feature a front-wheel-drive setup with a single-motor system producing 220 bhp. It will come with two battery options– 38kWh and 56kWh. The larger battery is said to deliver a claimed range of approximately 450 km. Reports indicate that the 56kWh battery pack could support 125kW charging, allowing it to charge from 10 to 80% in just 20 minutes.

    Baojun Yep/Yep Plus

While the demand for small cars may have decreased over the past few years, many Indian consumers still find them appealing, especially when available as an EV – and even more so, if it happens to be an SUV. The Baojun Yep and Yep Plus might not be as well known as the other models on this list, but they make a lot of sense for the Indian market.

Furthermore, JSW MG Motor has filed patents for both the Yep and its five-seater electric SUV in India. This suggests there’s a good chance that either model could eventually arrive in the country. Interestingly, the Yep is built on the same platform as the MG Comet EV, a factor that should simplify the process for MG Motor. However, the company has yet to officially confirm its launch plans.
