Xiaomi CEO Shows Off ‘Bulletproof’ Coating for EV Batteries
Xiaomi founder and CEO Lei Jun has demonstrated the durability of a new coating for electric vehicle batteries. In a video shared on Friday, Jun dropped three watermelons from the sixth floor of the company’s car factory on the outskirts of Beijing. Each watermelon was coated with a layer of the company’s “bulletproof” material.

The watermelons, after their fall, showed no signs of damage in the video. Jun stated that the same coating is used on the underside of the battery packs in Xiaomi’s new SU7 Ultra electric vehicles. This demonstration was designed to highlight the material’s resilience.
According to the South China Morning Post, citing Xiaomi’s website, the coating is designed to provide “tear, scratch, and puncture resistance more than 10 times greater than traditional PVC coatings.” Experts also speculate that the material may be a type of polyurea, recognized for its waterproof characteristics.
The coating could potentially prevent fires in accidents by preventing battery damage from punctures.
