BEIJING, March 13 (Reuters) – Xiaomi (1810.HK), the Chinese tech company, plans to launch its inaugural electric crossover SUV, the YU7, this summer. A government document indicates the vehicle will offer a driving range of up to 770 kilometers (478 miles).
The new SUV will enter the market with the intention of rivaling Tesla’s (TSLA.O) Model Y. The YU7 combines design elements of a traditional crossover SUV with a battery-powered drivetrain and will also be available in versions with shorter driving ranges, specifically 675 km and 760 km.
The YU7 is among the newly added models eligible for purchase tax breaks, according to an industry ministry notice.
Tesla began deliveries of its refreshed Model Y at the end of February. The long-range variant of the redesigned Model Y now boasts a driving range of 719 kilometers per charge, an increase from the previous 688 km, while the rear-drive variant’s range has been boosted to 593 km, up from 554 km.
