Xiaomi’s SU7: A Chinese EV Supercar Chasing Nürburgring Glory

Xiaomi, primarily known for its consumer electronics, has entered the electric vehicle market with the SU7. This all-electric supercar boasts impressive performance figures, a competitive price, and a clear ambition to dominate the track, particularly the legendary Nürburgring.

Available exclusively in China, the SU7 is priced at 529,900 renmibi, which translates to roughly $72,737 based on current exchange rates. Xiaomi claims the SU7 is the “world’s fastest mass-produced four-door sedan,” with a top speed of 217 mph and a blistering 0 to 62 mph acceleration time of just 1.98 seconds. This places it firmly in supercar territory.

Xiaomi’s focus appears to be on establishing the SU7’s performance credentials, especially around Germany’s famed Nürburgring. Two optional packages are in development, including a “Racing Package” and a “Nürburgring Nordschleife Limited Edition.” These packages will include upgrades specifically designed for track use, such as an optimized cooling system capable of handling two hot laps on the demanding circuit known as the “Green Hell.”

The SU7’s performance isn’t limited to the Nürburgring. In China, the car holds records at several circuits. According to Xiaomi, it is the fastest production car at the Shanghai International Circuit and the fastest four-door, mass-produced car at multiple other tracks.

The car’s design incorporates aerodynamic elements, including a carbon fiber rear wing that enhances both aesthetics and downforce for improved cornering. Xiaomi emphasizes that the SU7 is not a supercar, which may cause some concern for the competition. “Thanks to the new aerodynamic design, Xiaomi SU7 Ultra achieves a maximum downforce of 285kg, comparable to that of a supercar,” the company stated.

Equipped with a triple-motor configuration, the SU7 is estimated to have a range of approximately 391 miles, although this figure is likely to decrease significantly when driving at the vehicle’s performance limits. The interior features carbon fiber accents and a central screen for infotainment. Xiaomi intends for the SU7 to be a luxury vehicle, but its emphasis on achieving lap times and proving itself on the Nürburgring indicates a focus on speed and performance above all else.

With a price point lower than a Tesla Model S in the Chinese market, Xiaomi has plenty of opportunity to expand its influence. While currently only available in China, the company anticipates a possible global launch by 2027.
