Xpeng Aero HT, a subsidiary of the aerospace company Xpeng, has revealed its innovative “modular flying car.” The vehicle, unveiled at CES 2025, showcases a unique hybrid approach to personal transport, integrating an electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft within a minivan carrier.
The concept allows users to drive the vehicle as a regular car. When the pilot desires to fly, a single command deploys and unfolds the eVTOL unit from the back of the carrier. Following a flight, the aircraft reconnects to the carrier, which then retracts the aircraft’s arms and stows it back in the trunk. The vehicle has already received certification, been publicly demonstrated, and viewed by potential customers and investors.
Several eVTOL startups have already taken interest in the vehicle, with companies like Joby Aviation and Beta Technologies having used this vehicle for test flights and demonstrations. While the vehicle has received certification for usage, Xpeng still needs to obtain airworthiness certification and additional approvals before it can begin full-scale mass production. However, with 3,000 orders already received, mass production is projected to start later this year. The first deliveries of the vehicles are scheduled for 2026.
A spokesperson for Aero HT stated that the vehicle carrier is priced under $300,000. To support the anticipated production volume, Xpeng is currently constructing a production facility in Southern China, with a projected capacity of 10,000 vehicles annually when in full operation. Aero HT will initially launch the vehicle within the Chinese domestic market prior to exploring opportunities for international expansion.
