XPENG Unveils AI-Powered Smart Car Technology
Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer XPENG announced its latest advancements in smart car technology at its Smart AI Technology Conference in Guangzhou on July 30, 2024. The company officially launched the AI-powered Tianji XOS 5.2 in-car operating system and announced its global rollout to all eligible XPENG models.
“AI has started leading new trends and technological waves post-2023, bringing four new directions: chips, large models, autonomous driving, and robotics. Among the new leading enterprises riding this AI wave is XPENG,” said He Xiaopeng, Chairman and CEO of XPENG.
Tianji XOS 5.2: Enhanced Features and Capabilities
The Tianji XOS 5.2 boasts 72 new features and 412 optimizations, encompassing intelligent driving, ecosystem connectivity, and smart cockpit functionalities. Notably, XPENG’s XNGP (XPENG Navigation Guided Pilot) intelligent driving feature will be expanding its coverage nationwide. According to XPENG, “wherever navigation is possible, AI smart driving is possible.”
The latest public beta version of the XNGP system is already capable of automatically navigating through ETC toll stations. The automaker anticipates the XNGP system will achieve true door-to-door smart driving, navigating through ETC toll stations, parking lot barriers, and private roads of campuses by the fourth quarter of 2024.
XPENG’s smart driving technology is currently in its initial phase of “nationwide usability.” The company projects it will advance to the second stage by the fourth quarter of 2024. Further improvements are expected by late 2025 or early 2026, with user safety and efficiency interventions significantly decreasing, enhancing the overall user experience.
Ecosystem Connectivity and Smart Cockpit
In terms of ecosystem connectivity, the Tianji XOS 5.2 integrates with Apple’s ecosystem, allowing for Siri commands for functions such as car washing mode, rapid cooling, and sentry mode. The system also supports gesture control and versatile NFC car control, providing convenient access to car doors, charging ports, and other features. The smart cockpit offers 80 customizable instrument styles, 1,620 driving mode options, and comprehensive screen mirroring for seamless transitions between entertainment and work.
Global Rollout and Collaboration
The Tianji XOS 5.2 will be initially available in China starting July 30, followed by a rollout to ten other countries, including Germany, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, the Netherlands, and France on August 15.
He Xiaopeng also discussed XPENG’s collaboration with Volkswagen, indicating that the first car model utilizing their jointly developed electronic and electrical architecture (EEA), the China Main Platform (CMP), could enter mass production within 24 months. This follows an agreement signed in April 2024, where XPENG and Volkswagen committed to developing leading EEA technology for both Volkswagen’s CMP and MEB platforms, which are set to be implemented in Volkswagen-branded electric vehicles made in China from 2026.
Charging Infrastructure Expansion
Furthermore, at the conference, He Xiaopeng disclosed that by July 2024, XPENG had established 1,300 self-operated stations, including 1,000 supercharging stations. The company plans to establish 10,000 self-operated charging stations and 4,500 liquid-cooled supercharging stations by 2026.
MONA M03 Launch
Additionally, the first batch of XPENG MONA M03 display cars will be delivered to stores in approximately 100 cities nationwide, beginning August 1.
