Zeekr, the luxury arm of Chinese conglomerate Geely Automotive Holdings, is entering Australia’s competitive electric vehicle (EV) market with the 7X, a midsize SUV that promises to challenge established brands like Tesla. Chasing Cars travelled to Hangzhou, China, to test the 7X and explore its features, performance, and potential in the Australian market.

    Key Features and Pricing

The Zeekr 7X is available in three grades in China: Premium RWD, Long Range RWD, and Performance AWD. Standard equipment includes 19-inch alloy wheels, matrix LED headlights, leather upholstery, and a 21-speaker premium stereo. Optional features include air suspension, Akebono performance brakes, and nappa-grade leather upholstery. Australian pricing is expected to start around $70,000-$90,000 before on-road costs.

    Driving Experience

The 7X’s driving experience is characterized by its smooth and refined powertrain, quiet cabin, and comfortable front seats. The Long Range RWD variant tested on public roads demonstrated a plush and approachable demeanor, while the Performance AWD model showed impressive acceleration and handling on a closed gymkhana track. However, the ride needs an Australian retune to better handle local road conditions.

    Interior and Tech

The Zeekr 7X’s interior is designed to feel like a traditional vehicle, with a focus on ergonomics and practicality. The cabin features a 13-inch digital instrument cluster, a 16-inch infotainment touchscreen, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The front seats are highly customizable and comfortable, with ventilation, heating, and massage functions.

    Safety and Ownership Costs

The Zeekr 7X has not been independently crash-tested, but its crash and safety performance is expected to be strong due to its ‘Dome Armour’ construction. The SUV features a range of standard safety features, including adaptive cruise control, lane keep-assist, and blind spot monitoring. Ownership costs are expected to be competitive, with efficient charging times and a range of up to 615km on a single charge.

    Verdict

The Zeekr 7X is a refined, quiet, and well-equipped electric SUV that offers a plush experience and value in the Australian market. While it has some areas for improvement, such as ride quality and brand recognition, it has the potential to become an interesting new option for buyers seeking a premium EV.
